Tennessee Board of Regents Receives WOW Award from WCET

TBR Emerging Technology and MobilizationCongratulations to Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) for winning one of three 2012 WOW Awards from WCET (WICHE Cooperative for Educational Technologies). According to the press release, the award is for the “TBR Mobile App Education and Workforce Resource Center, a publicly accessible, growing repository of mobile app's for learning that have undergone peer review.” James Bowey, professor at Winona State University and chair of the WOW Awards Committee said, "At the heart of the award and this year's three honored projects is that each addresses a real and important need that is shared widely across higher education. It's the innovative, often collaborative, way in which these projects were carried forward that merits the award, as well as the fact that each serves as a model for others to replicate. "Also noted in the press release, “Utilizing a peer review rubric originally developed by MERLOT, a series of quality standards are utilized in the review of all app's, such as compliance with ADA standards, device neutral, cost, privacy, student engagement and outcomes. Since the TBR Mobile App Resource was launched in 2010, the number of subject matter disciplines has grown to 125 and the total number of educational and workforce app's has reached 60,000+ with continuous daily uploads.”

New Partnership with Quality Matters

MERLOT and Quality Matters have announced plans to explore potential synergies between their respective professional development and technology services and collaborate on joint projects to advance higher education’s capacity to design quality online courses and choose online content that meet quality requirements.
QMThe first joint effort of these two internationally recognized organizations is crystallized in the theme of the Quality Matters' 4th Annual Conference on Quality Assurance in Online Learning: Where Design and Content Converge - Featuring Special Contributions by MERLOT, which recently took place October 3-6, 2012. Workshops, presentations, and the networking among QM and MERLOT community members is producing project plans and priorities to address our shared communities’ needs.

Deb Adair, Director of the Quality Matters Program, highlights the opportunities in collaboration:  “We see the potential for positive and productive synergy between two organizations that support faculty peer review for the continuous improvement and quality assurance of online and blended courses.  As design (QM’s focus) and content (MERLOT’s focus)  are clearly integrated in a course, developing ways to effectively and efficiently connect the development and review of these preconditions for course quality will benefit the online learning community.“

New Partner Community - UDL

Profile ImageOne of the new partner communities in MERLOT is the Cal State EnACT/Universal Design for Learning group.  You can find the portal at:  http://www.udluniverse.com/  If UDL is an important topic to you or to your campus, you can find a lot of useful resources on the portal.

"UDL-Universe supports post secondary faculty and staff by providing resources and examples to improve post secondary educational outcomes for all students, including those with disabilities. UDL-U is designed to be useful for inquiries related to individual UDL topics, issues, or problems, as well as scalable to larger course redesign efforts (e.g., Faculty Learning Communities, accessible instructional media)."

New Partner Community - OER and Accessibility

OER and Accessibility

Access to open educational resources (OER) is growing, but not for all.   Not only do the online educational materials need to be freely available and with permission to use, the OER needs to be designed so people with disabilities can use the OER for their teaching and learning as well. The California State University (CSU), MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resources for Learning and Online Teaching), Open Courseware Consortium (OCWC), the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), and Flexible Learning for Open Education (FLOE) have partnered on a joint mission to enable the community of accessible technology experts, advocates, and users to build an online community and collection of open education resources that can improve universal learning by facilitating the contribution and sharing of accessible technology information, expertise, and accessible online teaching and learning materials.  (http://oeraccess.merlot.org)
